Lake Fenton J.V.
White finished up the season with a big win over Atherton, 18-12.
Q.B Logon Post set up the first touch down to Max Watters in the first
quarter. Atherton came right back with
a score
Early in the second half Lake Fenton's defense forced an Atherton fumble and the Devils D.J Melton recovered the fumble. Lake Fenton took this opportunity and this time Wayne Simons was at Q.B. and connected with Max Watters for another touch down, Atherton showed that they weren't ready to give up yet when they scored in the middle of the fourth quarter, tying up the score 12 to 12. It was a defensive struggle from there on, until with only 14 seconds left, JV White's Devon Beagle intercepted the ball on the Atherton 15 yard line. With the offensive line doing its job, the Blue Devils were able to come up with the big play. Logan Post connected with Chris Bence with only 11 seconds left on the clock, to seal the victory 18-12. What a way to end a wonderful season. Thanks to the hard work of the WHOLE team, you guys are great! Coach Jim Lake Fenton's JV Black Team swatted the Kearsley Hornets 14-8. Brandon Drouillard returned the opening kick off 70 yards for a touchdown behind the blocking of his team mates. Chase Marcola kicked the extra point to make the score 8 – 0. (In youth football if you kick an extra point it is worth 2 points). On the ensuing kick off Kearsley returned the kick off 60 yards for a touchdown and the extra point kick was good. With only 30 second into the game the score was tied at 8 -8. The Lake Fenton’s JV Black offense could not put a drive together in the first half and the defense held strong to take an 8 -8 score into half time. At half time the coaches talked to their players and challenged them with 3 things, Pride, Effort and Teamwork. The JV Black offence responded in the 3rd quarter with a 80 yard reverse to Chase Marcola for a touchdown. The extra point was missed by a very tired Marcola making the score at the end of the third quarter 14 – 8. The JV Black defense took over in the third quarter, holding the Kearsley Hornets from scoring in the second half. Head Coach Keith Hasenfratz said after the game “This was the best game the team has played this year. Or defense has been strong all year holding high scoring teams to just 8 points in each of the last 3 games!. We worked on our special teams and the offense all week and it paid off. I was very proud of our players tonight. Everyone contributed to the win. When I was on the field with the defense, I could not tell if we had the normal players in their positions or if someone had come in and replaced them. It was awesome to see every player play as hard an as passionate as they did tonight.” Lake Fenton’s JV Black team is coached by Keith Hasenfratz, Rick Corcoran and Jim Dunleavy. They now take their team with a 2 – 3 record, up to a very tough Birch Run Team this weekend for the final game of the season.
The Varsity team lost to Atherton 28-26 in a very exciting, down to the
wire game. Leading 14-6 at halftime, the Devils defense allowed two
quick touchdowns by Atherton to open the 2nd half making the score 22-14 in
favor of the Wolverines. The Devils then rebounded with a 50-yard
touchdown run by running back Bryce Hopkins, on his first carry of the game.
The two point conversion failed making the score 22-20. The Wolverines
followed with a touchdown and two point conversion late in the fourth quarter
to make the score 28-20. The Devils got the ball back with less than two
minutes remaining in the game. Quarterback Cory Pierce handed off to the
determined running back Mitch Kirk who hauled off a 30-yard run for a first
down. The very next play Kirk, who was not about to go home without
putting up a fight, received the handoff again and scampered 68 yards,
breaking several tackles along the way. Kirk was knocked out of bounds
at the two-yard line. On third and goal at the 2, Kirk got in the
endzone untouched thanks to the blocking of the offensive line of Alex Okopien,
Jeff Heller, Jacob Vaillancourt, Andrew McGlaughlin, Nate Franks, Brett Braund
and Bradey Viers. With 40 seconds remaining on the clock and the Devils
out of timeouts, the 2-point conversion try to tie the game was next, but a
bobbled snap and broken play ended all chances for Devils.
Offensively, running back Bryce Hopkins had 57 yards on two carries.
Workhorse running back Mitch Kirk had 239 yards on 24 carries for an
astounding 9.958 average per carry. Kirk also had 20 kick return yards.
Defensively, Kirk led the team with 7 tackles and 1 quarterback sack, Cory
Pierce followed with 4 pass deflections and 2 tackles while Nate Franks had 3
tackles and 1 sack. Calvin Williams and Tommy Williamson had 2
tackles each while Andrew McGlaughlin, Austin Sarkozi, Bryce Hopkins, Justin
Parker, Alex Okopien and Jeff Heller had 1 tackle each.
