Congratulations to Lake Fenton High School seniors Melissa Beck and Daniel Taneyhill for winning our Lake Fenton Youth Football Senior Cheerleading and Football Scholarships! The other great applicants for the Lake Fenton Youth Scholarship include Tyler Rossmaessler and Curt Keranen for Football, and Cheer applicants Steevy Griffin, Jessie Hennessey, Holly O'Dell, Danielle Packard, and Megan Primel. In addition to LF Youth winners Melissa and Dan, Jesse Hennessey and Megan Primel have won scholarships from the Mid-Michigan Rural Football League. They beat candidates from 17 other areas! We are very proud of the academic and athletic achievements of the kids who were part of our Youth program. ALL of these kids are incredible. Their coaches spoke highly of everyone. The average grade point average of these 9 was a remarkable 3.89!!! When asked how their experience with the Lake Fenton Youth Football program shaped who they are now as a young person, here were the essays of winners Melissa Beck and Dan Taneyhill... Melissa... "I began cheering in middle school as a Youth Football cheerleader, and then, as they say, "the rest is history." Every fall since that initial football season I have been cheering. In fact, I even plan on extending my cheerleading career on into college, as I have my try-out for the University of Michigan Cheer Team at the end of April. The Youth Football Program has helped me discover a huge part of who I am, I am essentially a cheerleader at heart. I am an enthusiastic, bubbly, high-spirited person, and I thoroughly enjoy getting others involved. It is because of programs, such as Youth Football, that individuals are graciously given the opportunity to explore such sports as cheerleading and football. I am thankful for my opportunity to get involved in the program, as it has helped me to determine how much I actually adore cheerleading. My skills and technique were established at a young age, thanks to my youth cheerleading experience. I have since been allowed to perfect these skills at a much more efficient pace. I have become a better cheerleader, and perhaps athlete and learner all together, as a result of becoming active in our youth sports programs. I completely attribute the fact that I was able to make the Varsity Cheer Team through all four years of my high school career to Youth Football cheerleading and the experiences I gained through participation. I would also like to recognize that most of the development of my skills would never have been possible had the Youth Football program never been established, and I am very appreciative to the founders for helping me to discover an activity that brings me endless amounts of joy." Daniel... "I have had many great experiences with the Lake Fenton Youth Football program. The five years that I played football really shaped me into who I am today. I learned hard work, dedication, and fair play all while participating in this great program. I really feel that youth football not only helped me on the field, but also in the classroom. I know that football taught me to work hard for everything. I have done my best in every class during my high school career, and I feel my grades are proof of this. Hard work also pays off on the field,. I have never been the biggest, the fastest, or the strongest while playing football, but I always gave 110 percent. During my senior year I faced a lot of opposition. I played wide receiver for three years in high school, but during my senior campaign I was switched to tight end. I was significantly undersized at 5'11 and 165 pounds, and I had never played the position before. I never complained though, and I gave it my best shot. In the end, I started all nine games, and made some significant contributions to the team. I was rewarded for my hard work by being named Honorable Mention All League. I don't know if I could have worked through something like that without the lessons I learned while playing Lake Fenton Youth Football. Football has been a major part of my life, and I contribute that to our fine youth program. After I was done playing in the program, I gave back by volunteering to run the scoreboard and be a part of the chain gang. I know it's not much, but I loved giving back to the program that helped make me what I am today."
